5 Important AAC App Considerations

Here are the 5 important things to consider when selecting an AAC app for your mobile device:

  1. Needs: the most important factor to consider is the user's needs. What are their communication goals? What are their abilities and limitations? The app you choose should be able to meet the user's needs and be easy for them to use.

  2. Features: once you know the user's needs, you can start to look at the app's features. Some features to consider include:

    • The size and type of vocabulary

    • The ability to create and save custom vocabulary

    • The ability to use pictures, symbols, or text

    • The ability to generate speech

    • The ability to connect to other devices

  3. Cost: AAC apps can range in price from free to hundreds of dollars. It's important to find an app that fits your budget.

  4. Reviews: reading reviews from other users can be helpful in deciding which app to choose. Look for reviews that mention the app's features, ease of use, and overall effectiveness.

  5. Compatibility: make sure the app you choose is compatible with your mobile device. Not all apps are compatible with all devices.

Once you've considered all of these factors, you can start to narrow down your choices and find the best AAC app for your needs.

Here are some additional tips for choosing an AAC app:

  • Talk to a speech-language pathologist/therapist (SLP/SLT) or other AAC specialist, sometimes called assistive technology specialists. They can help you assess and recommend a specific app.

  • Try out different apps before you buy one. Some apps are free (e.g. Weave Chat AAC or ChatterBoards AAC) and many apps offer free trials or demo versions. This is a great way to see if an app is a good fit for you and/or the individual who needs the app.

  • Don't be afraid to switch apps if you're not happy with the one you chose. There are many great AAC apps available, so you're sure to find one.
